| Launch Complex 34 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. While performing a test of the Apollo spacecraft as it prepared for its first flight atop a Saturn 1B rocket a fire broke out in the sealed spacecraft on Friday, 27 January 1967 at 1831 hours, killing the crew: Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee. At right is the launch stand upon which the Saturn 1B rocket sat. At left are flame deflectors to funnel the exhaust of the rocket away from the pad. In the distance at left is Launch Complex 37, an active launch pad from which Delta IV rockets are launched. Look closely at the base of the tower, an orange Delta rocket can be seen cocooned inside.
