An Atlas 5 rocket carrying the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter lifts off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station at 7:43 a.m. on 12 August 2005. If all goes well, MRO will reach Mars in about seven months to undertake the most in-depth study of the Red Planet ever attempted. Other observers of the launch included a dolphin, lower left inset, and a sea gull, upper right inset. | |
