The images below show the Space Exploration Technologies Corporation, better known as SpaceX, Launch Control Center just inside the main gate at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. Behind the building on public display during July 2011 is the Dragon C1 spacecraft flown into space via a Falcon 9 rocket on 8 December 2010. The spacecraft completed nearly two orbits before splashing down off the coast of Southern California 3 hours, 19 minutes and 30 seconds after liftoff. This test flight is part of a series to certify the commercial craft to fly supplies to the International Space Station with NASA as the customer. Eventually, the goal is for the Dragon spacecraft to be able to carry up to seven people to low Earth orbit and to the International Space Station. Visit date: 10 July 2011 |
