An ultra-wide angle lens gives two unique perspectives in these time exposures taken from Patrick Air Force Base of the launch of a Delta IV rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on a mission for the U.S. military. The top image highlights the blazing white spotlights at the pad shining into the sky on the horizon at left. The splotches of red light are actually from a nearby traffic light shining down on the beach. The white lines on the horizon at right are ships moving slowly toward Port Canaveral. The bottom image shows the launch of the Delta IV with the Wideband Global SATCOM (WGS-4) aboard at 7:38 p.m. on 19 January 2012. According to the Boeing---makers of the satellite---press release: The mission of the Wideband Global SATCOM (WGS) is to provide broadband communications connectivity for U.S. and allied warfighters around the world. WGS is the highest-capacity military communications systems in the U.S. Department of Defense arsenal, providing a quantum leap in communications capability for the U.S. military. |
