The 50th Global Positioning System satellite, GPS 2R-11, a modern replacement for an older GPS model in orbit soars off the Earth aboard a Delta 2 rocket. Liftoff from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station was at 12:53 p.m. on 20 March 2004. The squiggly smoke lines coming off the exhaust plume in the above right image are the solid rocket boosters being jettisoned and spiraling away to impact into the Atlantic Ocean. Small inset lower right shows the dark silhouette of one of the jettisoned boosters against the exhaust plume. | |
